Reconnaissance flights into powerful Hurricane Irma began on Sunday, providing the National Hurricane Center with invaluable information about the storm and its possible path. NOAA has several Hurricane Hunter aircraft, including two P- 3s. One is nicknamed "Kermit," the other "Miss Piggy."It was Kermit that punched the eye wall of Irma in the video.
According to NOAA the scientists on these flights deploy Global Positioning System (GPS) dropwindsondes into the storm. These instruments send back measurements of pressure, humidity, temperature, wind direction and wind speed, which give meteorologists a detailed look at the structure of the storm and its intensity.
The aircraft also have Doppler radar on their tails as well as lower fuselage radar systems that scan the storm vertically and horizontally, according to NOAA. The P- 3s can also deploy probes called bathythermographs that measure the temperature of the sea.
