A prequel series taking place approximately ten years before the events of The Original Series, Discovery follows Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin- Green), the First Officer of the USS Shenzhou and later the USS Discovery. Burnham is the heretofore unmentioned adopted daughter of Sarek of Vulcan (James Frain), who is the father of Spock. Discovery also co- stars Michelle Yeoh as Captain Philippa Georgiou, commander of the Starship Shenzhou, and Jason Isaacs as Captain Gabriel Lorca, commander of the Starship Discovery. Netflix reportedly paid a hefty sum for exclusive international rights to Discovery (so much money that it’s rumored Netflix paid for the series’ production costs). While Trek fans outside of the borders of North America don’t have to subscribe to any extra (and otherwise unwanted) streaming services to enjoy Discovery, the trade- off is they don’t get to watch the series until the next day. Star Trek: Discovery will launch the first two episodes on Netflix on Monday, September 2. Each new episode will then be available within 2.

While many fans are skeptical about (or even opposed to) Discovery‘s rumored content and the way CBS has chosen to make the series available for viewing, the first new Star Trek series in a dozen years remains cause for celebration for Trekkers. Here’s hoping Discovery lives up to the venerable franchise’s reputation for endearing, iconic characters boldly embarking upon thought- provoking outer space adventures.

If I’m talking about real life shit, just getting things off of my chest, if they don’t have an element of hope, then there’s no use in writing it," says Barry.

And for every moment that aches with a feeling that borders on defeat, it’s flanked by Barry’s perseverance and unbreakable work ethic. While there’s a song like "Running Never Tamed Me," which Barry says caused his two daughters to break down crying the first time they heard it, there’s a song like "Riverbank," which carries a foot- stomping swagger that invites you into the anthemic ruckus. Against a steady backbeat, vamped piano, and Neil Young- esque, single- note solos, Barry becomes the ringleader of a triumphant chorus, guiding his collaborators to the song’s apex.
