Cohen Media Group Like the culinary geniuses of “Le Chef,” French cinema may need a new seasonal menu. This light, disposable soufflé from Daniel Cohen at times suggests “Ratatouille” with humans. For a film about mouthwatering cuisine, it offers only fleeting delectable sensations. The hero is Jacky (Michaël Youn), an aspiring chef who can’t keep a gig because he has no patience for his customers’ dining habits.
After his pregnant girlfriend (Raphaëlle Agogue) puts her foot down, Jacky takes a job painting a retirement home, but sneaks away to compose lavish meals for its residents. There he’s discovered by his idol, Alexandre Lagarde (Jean Reno), a revered but increasingly passé culinarian and TV personality who is about to be fired from his restaurant. The owner (Julien Boisselier) insists that he use cheaper, chemical- laden ingredients.“Le Chef” is primarily an odd- couple farce, as the stern, micromanaging Alexandre takes the authority- flouting Jacky under his wing. The film rises to the defense of what might be called classical French values, celebrating romance, steak frites and the neighborhood grocer in an era it sees as superficially impressed by i.
